Keio Exchange Student Orientation

The student orientation for exchange students at Keio University was held from 1:00 pm to 4:15 pm on September 15, with a requirement to bring a copy of your residency card to receive your student ID. As a Japanese resident, I brought my passport instead of the residency card. It is important to note that Keio University has multiple orientations, so it is recommended to confirm with the university to ensure you attend the correct one. I heard some exchange students had trouble gaining entry because they came to the wrong one.

During the orientation, information was provided about the history of Keio University, campus life, and the various opportunities available to exchange students such as joining circles (student-run organizations). However, one drawback was that there was another in-person meeting required to learn how to register for courses, which was not covered in the initial orientation.

Additionally, the weather changed unexpectedly during the orientation, with sunny skies turning into rain around 4 pm as everyone was preparing to leave. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before heading out for the day and to bring an umbrella, as many exchange students, including myself, were caught unprepared.

One interesting thing that I remember at the orientation was that the university brought up drugs being prohibited in Japan, and shared an example that an exchange student was actually sent back in the past for possession so it does not occur again.
